Theresa "Terri" Floegel, PhD, MSN, RN

Theresa (Terri) Floegel, PhD, MSN, RN joined Appalachian State University in 2026 with over 30 years of experience in clinical practice, nursing education, research, workforce development, and academic leadership. Dr. Floegel completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and earned a PhD in Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Wellness from Arizona State University. She also holds a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Floegel is passionate about nursing education and mentorship and has taught across academic settings, including undergraduate, DNP, and PhD programs at East Carolina University, Campbell University, Arizona State University, and the University of Cincinnati. Her academic experience includes curriculum leadership, clinical education, research mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She is committed to helping students connect evidence, research, and clinical practice to improve patient-centered outcomes. 

Dr. Floegel’s research examines physical activity, mobility, ambulation, and functional outcomes among older adults across the continuum of care. Her work explores how mobility and physical activity can be supported during and following hospitalization to help older adults maintain functional independence and quality of life. Her scholarship has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Cardiac Failure, Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, Geriatric Nursing, and Contemporary Nursing.

Prior to returning to academia, Dr. Floegel served in senior leadership roles in global nursing research, where she led a large international research nursing workforce and developed infrastructure to support decentralized clinical research. She is a former Captain in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, where she provided clinical and operational leadership in military healthcare settings in the United States and Europe.
