Tammy M. Haley, PhD, RN

Tammy Haley came to Appalachian in 2000 and is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Nursing.  Dr. Haley earned her Ph.D. in Nursing and master’s degrees in public health and nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She maintains national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Educator.

With a Registered Nurse background focused largely in pediatrics and pediatric oncology she has practiced in a variety of settings including major medical centers and rural critical access hospitals caring for patients across the lifespan.

Her research is grounded in the health of Appalachian communities and populations. Drawn from clinical practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner in a busy clinic largely serving adolescents and young adult women, early research interests focused primarily on the health of rural Appalachian adolescents.

In 2016, she began working with the Appalachian Teaching Project (now Appalachian Collegiate Research Initiative).  Past projects have focused on the social determinants of health with the examination food security, equitable food access and market channels for local foods, vaccine access and acceptability, and water quality impacts of microplastic pollution. This community-based work provides an opportunity for learning outside of the traditional classroom environment as students work collaboratively to cultivate strong ties to the community and develop the necessary skills for working with community partners and key stakeholders to address common goals using solutions-based action research methodologies. Additional areas of scholarship include nursing education, collaborative teaching, and pedagogical best practices.

She has successfully disseminated scholarly work through presentation and publication and has been recognized for teaching and scholarly contributions with the Distinguished Alumni award for Teaching and Dissemination from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health; the Chancellors Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh; the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Service at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford; and received the designation of Appalachian Teaching Fellow from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Dr. Haley currently serves on the Board of Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, a local nonprofit organization that helps to shape an equitable, sustainable local food system by supporting producers and connecting the community to local foods.
