Evelyn started her journey in nursing in 1992 as a CNA I, progressing through every level of the profession. Her prelicensure education was completed at Caldwell Community College. As a registered nurse, she worked at Ashe Memorial Hospital, Watauga Medical Center, and Fresenius Kidney Dialysis. Her work experience includes medical-surgical, operating room, outpatient surgery, recovery room, employee education, home health, long-term care management, and dialysis. She continued her education receiving a BSN from Appalachian State University, MSN from UNC-Greensboro, and PhD from East Tennessee State University. Born, raised, and living in the mountains of northwest North Carolina, her qualitative research centers on nursing in Appalachia from the nurses’ perspective, and interest in this area continues even though the Appalachian Region has greatly changed from the early years of her practice. She was a founding member of the Appalachian State University Nursing Honor Society and the Tri-State Chapter of Rural Nurse Organization. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society, North Carolina Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. She has published in peer-reviewed journals, reviewed for a major publishing company, and presented at nursing and regional conferences.
Evelyn was married to her high school sweetheart for 44+ years before he passed away due to respiratory disease. She has two grown daughters and 2 teen-aged grandchildren. Spending time with family is the highlight of her life. In time away from work, she works on the small family farm but loves to can, cook, sew, quilt, crochet, knit, and paint. Reading has been a beloved occupation all her life although time to indulge has been limited for the last several years. She lives in Creston with her two dogs, Lady and Ruby, who are very spoiled but provide companionship and unlimited love.
