Dr. Welborn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing. She received her PhD at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2020 where she received the Doctoral Research Award for Excellence in Research through Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Her Master’s degree in Nursing Education was earned at East Carolina University in 2007, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing also from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2001.
Prior to joining the team at Appalachian State University, Dr. Welborn taught in the undergraduate nursing program at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Forsyth Technical Community College. Her clinical background includes maternal/child nursing care in both inpatient and community care settings, including neonatal intensive care, birthing suites, mother/baby, general pediatrics, and school health services.
Her research includes both quantitative and qualitative work, with a focus on discourse analysis surrounding stigma of mothers who use substances in pregnancy. Collaborative work with a team in Public Health Education seeks to better understand the healthcare dynamics that impact caregiving practices for this vulnerable population. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Neonatal Nursing and Nursing Forum, and presented research at regional, national, and international conferences.
Dr. Welborn is President of AppState’s PhiPsi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and serves her community as a volunteer nurse at Victory Junction Camp for children living with complex medical and physical needs.
She resides in Davie County, North Carolina, with her husband, two daughters, and a multitude of fur children.
