BSN Pre-licensure Application

Application and Admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Pre-Licensure Program

Information about the application process

Admission to the BSN Pre-Licensure program is a competitive process that first requires admission to Appalachian State University (ASU). No applications are reviewed until admission to the University is confirmed.

The application process has several components -- please read all instructions carefully paying close attention to due dates. Questions related to any part of the application process may be directed to Dr. Kathleen Rayman at 828-262-7460, or by email to raymankm@appstate.edu.

The BSN Pre-Licensure program is designed to begin in the first summer session between the sophomore and junior years. The application deadline is January 17th for each new class beginning in May. Application and all associated application materials must be submitted by this date in order for the application to be considered complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review.

Transfer Students

Applicants to the nursing program must have been accepted to ASU in order to be considered for admission to the pre-licensure BSN program. Applicants are responsible for providing current official transcripts or evidence of current enrollment in pre-requisite coursework. Transcripts from other universities must be submitted in a sealed and signed envelope. All transcripts or proof of current or planned enrollment in prerequisites must be received by the Department of Nursing by the deadline date. ASU will not grant transfer credit for any nursing courses; all nursing courses required for the BSN degree must be completed at ASU.

Criminal Background Checks & Drug Screening

Students admitted to the upper division BSN Pre-Licensure program may be subject to drug screening and criminal background checks. Students will be notified when this is required and may be responsible for costs associated with these requirements. Unacceptable results on the criminal background check or drug test may exclude a student from clinical placements and thereby result in dismissal from the program.

Final Acceptance

Not all applicants who meet the minimum requirements can be accommodated into the BSN Pre-Licensure program; therefore, applicants whose credentials present the best qualifications of those meeting minimum requirements will be selected. Students are notified early in the Spring semester of their acceptance status. Applicants may be granted provisional acceptance pending completion of prerequisite courses in the Spring term and/or submission of other required documentation. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the Department of Nursing has all final spring semester transcript grades and documents for final acceptance into the BSN program.
